A family therapy case study on a referred child with emotional and behavioral problems
Kim Tae-Han

Abstract
This case study is based on family therapy for a child with emotional and behavioral problems. The problems were related to his parents¡¯ marital conflicts, mother's parenting attitudes, and history of her own family. The therapist tried to restore parents-child relationships and reach consensus on the marital conflicts and parenting skills throughout 14 counseling sessions. Mother was guided to deal with unsolved problems in her family of origin. The therapist focused on changing family relationships rather than the child¡¯s problems during the entire counseling process. The researcher transcribed counseling recording files from the sessions into documents and analyzed them with Nvivo 10 software. The child showed clinical levels of anxiety/depression, somatic symptoms, aggressive behavior, and other problems on a pre-test of counseling by CBCL. The test also indicated quasi-clinical levels of emotional responsiveness and sleep problems. In a post-test, the scores of all scales were decreased to normal levels.
